Swim FAQS
Here you will find a list of frequently asked questions.
-
What is the requirement to be able to join the Swim Team?
- Swimmers age 3-18 are able to join The Jones Creek Swim Team as long as they are able to swim independently for 12 meters. Ideally we would like to see each child swim the length of the pool (25 meters) with out holding onto the lane ropes for assistance. We understand however, that all children have their strengths and weaknesses and our coaches will work with them to strengthen their ability to swim distance. If there is any doubt that they are not able to participate and feel as if they need additional swim lessons prior to joining the team our coaches will communicate with the parents immediately. We however encourage all of our children to try. In most cases each child is swimming the distance by the first official meet.

What does my child need to do to prepare on the day of a swim meet?
- Your child needs to wear the team swimsuit and have goggles and a cap. Kids don't have to wear a cap or goggles but it is definitely recommended.
- Make sure your child brings one or two towels to each meet.
- Do not let your child play outside or swim in the heat prior to the meet. They need to drink lots of water and rest.
- Eat healthy and bring healthy snacks such as fruit and protein to the meet. There will be concessions available at each home meet and usually at away meets.
- Bring sunscreen and bug spray.
- Make sure your child has their events "marked" on their arm before the meet. If you have questions about an event, feel free to ask one of the head coaches.
-
Should I print my own heat sheet for the meet?
- YES, we recommend that all parents/volunteers and spectators print their own copy of the heat sheet prior to coming to the meet, as copies will not be available at the meet. Additional note: a lot of parents like to highlight their kids events and their kids' friends events to keep track throughout the meet of when everyone is swimming.
-
How many events will my child swim?
- The maximum number of events each swimmer can be in is 2 relays, and 3 individual events.
- Relays consist of 4 swimmers and limited relays are allowed to be entered in each meet. Not every child will be in a relay.
- Relays are a privilege. Relays are rewards to those swimmers that come to practice and try their best. Some relays are scratched or thrown out before a meet begins due to a swimmer not being able to attend. If this happens, coaches will try their best to find another relay for the child to swim in.
-
What is a Medley Relay?
- A medley relay consists of all four strokes. The first swimmer swims backstroke, second swimmer swims breaststroke, third swimmer swims butterfly, and the last swimmer swims freestyle. 6 and under swimmers do not participate in this type of relay.
-
What do I need to do if my child can not make it to a scheduled meet?
- Please notify your head coach/s immediately if you are unable to attend the scheduled meet. They will need to find a replacement swimmer or notate that you are not participating. It is very important to let them know asap so that they do not have to scratch any relays that your child may be in. Scratching an event will disappoint the other swimmers that are signed up in that event.
-
How long do swim meets last?
- Swim meets usually last about 4 hours. Swimmers arrive an hour before the meet starts to warm up.
-
What is Time Trials?
- Time Trials is a swim meet in which every swimmer swims all 4 strokes to get a starting time for each event. This allows the coaches to see what strokes need more attention at practice.
-
What is the Divisional meet?
- This swim meet is one of the biggest meets of the season and is the last one at the end of the season. Every team in our division comes to the Augusta Aquatics Center and swims. This is the meet that we prepare all season for and therefore, we need as many swimmers as possible to attend this meet.
-
How can we see the results from the previous meet?
- A document will be posted within a day or two of the completed meet. You are also available to see times posted for your child by signing into the swimtopia mobile app. Your child will also be awarded ribbons for each completed meet. These ribbons will be handed out later in the week. If you child has also dropped their time from their last recorded meet, they will be given a "speeding ticket" and a golden coin. After they receive two coins they are eligible to turn those coins in for a special sweet treat as a reward.
-
Volunteering
- Each family must have a parent volunteer at each meet. With out parent volunteers the swim meet would not be possible. Please see each meet registration to sign up for your volunteer position. If you have questions and would like more information don't hesitate to reach out to Dani Fritsch.
-
Who do I contact with questions/concerns regarding coaching, registration, volunteering, etc.?
- Please contact a board member versus talking directly to the coaches regarding administrative concerns. You may contact us using the contact us link or you can call Barbara Lacombe directly at 706-836-0766.
-
When is it ok to talk to the Coaches about my child?
- Please DO NOT talk to the Coaches during practice as they are very busy coaching all of the kids. It is best to email them directly or talk with one of the board members at practice if they are available. If you would to approach a coach AFTER practice is over you are free to do so as long as they are not directly supervising the children in the water or around the pool deck. They are responsible for keeping all eyes on deck as long as there are swim team children present.
- You will see the link Swim Team 101 for more information on how to read a heat sheet and how to mark your child for swim meets. We want all of our families to feel comfortable joining our team so if you have any questions or have concerns please feel free to contact us!
